Admittedly, I’m the conservative banana of the DSPR bunch. I try not to curse and I rarely drink. And, while I have a warped sense of humor (just like the rest of the crew), I tend to appreciate the more modest side of things. Example: I DO NOT like Lady Gaga, even a little bit... and that’s putting it nicely.
With that said, I was a little surprised at Apple’s move this weekend to ban sexy apps. Before this, I would have told you that my perception of the Apple brand was that they tend to be more liberal and less stuffy than the other guys. Even though sexy apps aren’t my bag-o-chips, who are we to decide what others can/can’t do?
Nonetheless, I applaud Apple for this move. Why?
First, for keeping its brand away from unnecessary controversy. Yes, Apple is edgy. But edgy doesn’t mean crossing a line. Apple has maintained a relatively squeaky clean image, becoming a household name. If they choose not to endorse something that might infringe on their brand perception, that’s Apple’s prerogative.
Second, for making efforts not to alienate different target audiences. Sexy apps might be widely accepted by many, but can you really blame parents for not wanting their kids to access lewd content?? Also, Apple just brought the stragglers (those who haven’t yet converted to the Mac side) one step closer to embracing the Apple brand.
And finally, from a personal stand point - imagine sitting next to someone in a public place - a movie theatre (Pee Wee Herman anyone?), the light rail or even church, and the stranger sitting next to you is perusing inappropriate material on an Apple app. Count me out. Sure, they could access it anyway, but at least their avenues are more limited.
