Sam AlpertFounder Of all the Green Gorillas in our jungle, Sam's the one with the greenest thumb. Some of us even call him the Plant Whisperer. Shhh... The turning point in Sam's life was back in 2002 when he was accepted into the Peace Corps and had 10 days to decide if he wanted to spend two years in Guatemala. Foregoing living in the jungle (although the idea of not showering for days was pretty intriguing to him), he toiled for two of the oldest PR agencies in Arizona. Instead of building mud huts and eating bugs, he developed relationships with the media, public, business and community leaders. He beat his chest loudly for clients in the legal, retail, real estate development, hospitality, restaurant, government and non-profit jungles. He then met his (business) partner, David, in prison and the rest is history. Sam's true passion is working with children and the Hispanic community - that's too important to make jokes about. He has been a Big Brother since 2005, served on the Board of Directors of Scottsdale Prevention Institute and recently joined the Board of Directors at Friendly House, the second-oldest non-profit in the state which provides citizenship classes, workforce development and educational services to more than 40,000 people every year.. Fluent in Spanish and English (good for a PR guy), he also volunteers his time teaching English to Mexicans and South Americans at the Paiute Neighborhood Center. He guest lectures at ASU and Mesa Community College, urging students to get out of the marketing and PR field while they still can. Before all of that, he spent his early-20s working in Monterrey, Mexico (Me-hee-co) for a start-up venture called Villa XXI, a multimodal facility. Looking to become part of NAFTA, the project served as a freight consolidation and distribution center that housed foods and other products from the United States and then dispersed them throughout Mexico using different modes of transportation - railroad, air, water and ground. Sam was responsible for writing business plans, raising money and providing marketing support for the project. We think he was just kicking it on the beach, building sand castles and knocking back banana tequila shots, but whatever. Sam likes to spend his free time, uh, wait we don't know what he does on the weekends. For such a friendly ape, he's really secretive. Best that we can tell he has no interests or hobbies. |
